Curriculum Offer for Pupils with SEND

Curriculum Offer and Learning Environments

We believe that inclusive education means supporting all pupils to learn, contribute and participate in all aspects of school life alongside their peers.  It is important to us that all pupils have the same opportunities whilst at Oxclose Primary Academy.  We do our best to ensure that all pupils can access all opportunitites. We do not see SEND as a barrier to accessing the full curriculum and ensure that pupils with SEND are included in all activities, in order to promote the highest levels of achievement.

We believe that:

  • All pupils should be set appropriately challenging targets and outcomes so that they achieve to the best of their ability.
  • The curriculum should be modified to meet needs of pupils.  This could be linked to modifying tasks and activities, thinking about how learning is recorded or the delivery of teaching for learners.
  • Pupils should have access to a range of group sizes, dependent on the task and needs of the pupils.  This could mean whole class, small group or one to one support.
  • Classrooms should be supportive to those peoples who have neurodevelopmental diversity, including self regulation strategies and visual timetables.
  • All staff should be well trained and aware of and sensitive to the needs of all pupils, teaching pupils in a way that is more appropriate to their needs.
  • All staff should know pupils well, including their strengths and those areas which are more challenging.
  • All pupils should have the support and opportunity for regulations strategies so that they can engage within the curriculum.
  • Staff using the Emotion Coaching strategy supports pupils in recognising and understanding their emotions.

Teaching Approach

All pupils follow the National Curriculum at a level and a pace that is appropriate to their abilities. At times and when it is felt appropriate, modifications to the curriculum may be implemented.

To ensure that the curriculum is appropriate for pupils with SEND we:

  • Ensure that all pupils have access to the curriculum and all school activities.
  • Help all pupils achieve to the best of their abilities.
  • Ensure that teaching staff are aware of and sensitive to the needs of all pupils, teaching pupils in a way that is more appropriate to their needs and that relevant and appropriate outcomes are planned and measurable.
  • Ensure that all staff understand different SEND needs which affect how children learn, through a robust system of staff training and sharing of knowledge.
  • Ensure the provision fully develops pupils’ abilities and interests to gain maximum access to the curriculum.
  • Promote self-regulation, emotional literacy, independence and social interaction by scaffolding learning and encouraging independence at all age and ability levels.

Extraordinary Opportunities

All of our extra-curricular activities and school visits are available to all our pupils, including our before and after-school clubs.

All pupils are encouraged to go on our school visits, including our residential visit to Derwent Hill.  We work with providers to ensure that all pupils, including those within our ARP, have the opportunity to access this residential visit.

All pupils take part in all external, visits, sports days and in school workshops.  No pupil is ever excluded from taking part in these activities because of their SEN or disability and we make whatever reasonable adjustments are needed to make sure that they can be included.
