Our Year 6 pupils recently took part in a Healthy Heads workshop led by Lucy Bryant, our link Education Mental Health Practitioner. The session focused on supporting pupils as they prepare for their transition to secondary school.

The workshop was organised at a particularly important time, taking place just two weeks before pupils attend their chosen secondary schools for their transition days. This ensured that the learning was both relevant and meaningful, helping to prepare children emotionally and practically for the next stage of their education.

During the session, pupils explored a range of key topics, including:

  • What transition means and why it can feel challenging
  • Their own thoughts and feelings about moving to secondary school
  • Helpful and unhelpful behaviours when managing change
  • Strategies for approaching and solving problems they may encounter
  • The importance of setting goals
  • Practical coping strategies and wellbeing tips

The children contributed thoughtfully throughout the session, asking insightful and appropriate questions. It was particularly encouraging to hear that many pupils are feeling positive and excited about their upcoming transition.

This workshop forms an important part of our PSHE curriculum and wider personal development offer, supporting pupils to build resilience, emotional awareness and confidence. It also aligns closely with our Skills Builder programme, particularly developing skills such as staying positive, problem-solving and self-management.

We would like to extend our sincere thanks to Lucy Bryant and the Healthy Heads team for delivering such an engaging and timely session, helping our pupils feel prepared and supported as they take their next steps.
