Careers Related Learning (CRL) Curriculum

The aim of Careers Related Learning (CRL) at Oxclose Primary Academy is to enable our children to develop an early understanding of themselves and the world around them.

We aren’t asking our young children to decide their future careers; rather, we are trying to build their awareness of opportunities and helping them to connect their learning to both their present experiences and future possibilities.

At Oxclose Primary Academy, we are committed to broadening horizons and raising aspirations. We provide children with meaningful experiences that allow them to explore the world of work while developing the skills, knowledge and attitudes that will support them throughout their education and into later life.

Through carefully planned curriculum links, encounters with a wide range of role models, and real-life experiences, pupils begin to understand how their learning is relevant beyond the classroom. We attempt to embed CRL across the curriculum and wider school life.

We provide opportunities for children to engage with visitors, take part in enrichment activities, and explore different roles within the community. This approach supports pupils to challenge stereotypes, develop confidence, and recognise their own strengths and interests.

Our Skills Builder programme plays a key role in this provision, explicitly teaching essential skills such as communication, teamwork, problem solving and leadership. Through weekly sessions, pupils explore how these skills link to real-life careers, helping them to make meaningful connections between their learning and their futures.

Ultimately, our aim is to inspire all pupils so that they leave primary school with high aspirations, a strong sense of possibility, and the essential skills needed for their future.

CRL Experiences

Creative Careers Day – Arts Centre Washington
Year 6 pupils explore a range of creative careers and pathways across the cultural and creative industries through engaging, practical workshops led by artists and creative professionals.

Career Insight Employer Encounter (Skills Builder)
Year 5 pupils take part in a career insight experience focused on the corporate world. This is particularly valuable for those interested in careers such as law, finance, business, and professional services. Employer volunteers share their career journeys, the skills they have developed, and how these apply in the workplace.

Visitors in School
We welcome a range of visitors into school, including firefighters, postal workers and nurses, who speak to children about their roles within the community. These experiences help pupils develop curiosity, broaden their understanding of careers, and make clear links between learning and real-life opportunities.

Skills Builder Programme
Careers education is woven into our Skills Builder sessions. Each year group explores different careers linked to the skills they are developing. At the start of each new skill, children engage with a MyPath video, introducing them to a real-life career and demonstrating how the skill is used in the workplace. This ensures meaningful connections between classroom learning, personal skills and future opportunities.
