Oxclose Primary Celebrate Science Week
Back
From March 10th to 14th, children at Oxclose Primary Academy immersed themselves in our annual Science Week. This year’s theme posed an exciting question: Can I be a computer game designer?
The week kicked off with a whole-school gathering, where students were welcomed by Dr. Karl Southern, a scientist specialising in educational gaming, and Dr. Lorraine Coghill, Durham University’s Director of Science Engagement. Through engaging demonstrations, they explored the fascinating connections between science and gaming before setting the children a series of challenges to tackle throughout the week.
From Early Years to Year 6, students engaged in hands-on scientific problem-solving each day. Some explored artificial intelligence, others experimented with virtual reality headsets, and some even designed their own mobile apps. A special highlight was a visit from Gavin Vaughan of Sunderland Software City, who led an exciting AI and remote-controlled robot workshop for Key Stage 1 students. Throughout the week, children also collaborated to create an interactive storybook, showcasing their creativity and teamwork.
Science Week concluded with a lively celebration assembly, where students proudly presented their work. Special awards were also given to those who demonstrated Laidlaw Values throughout their projects.
It was an inspiring week of discovery, creativity, and innovation!
