Year 6's Adventure to Yorkshire Wildlife Park

What better way to celebrate the final weeks of primary school than with an unforgettable trip to Yorkshire Wildlife Park?

The day began bright and early, with children arriving at school for a 7:30am start. Surprisingly, every single Year 6 pupil arrived on time, ready for their adventure! By 7:45am, we were on the road and the excitement was already building. The coach journey was filled with singing, laughter and plenty of anticipation as the children counted down the miles until our arrival.

Reaching the park just before opening time at 10am, we began our visit with a stop at the gift shop, where children were able to purchase some treasured souvenirs to remember their special day.

Our first animal encounter was with the baboons, who seemed every bit as curious about our large group as we were about them! We then made our way through the Lemur Walkthrough, where the lemurs appeared far less interested in us, choosing instead to relax and sunbathe in the glorious weather.

One of the highlights of the day came when we visited the magnificent polar bears. We spent around twenty minutes watching them splash, swim and play in the water. At times, they were surprisingly vocal, and we learned that excited polar bears often produce a deep, rumbling sound that resembles a mixture of a growl, huff and "woof". During our visit, one curious child asked Mrs Norton where all the ice had gone, sparking an impromptu scientific discussion linked to our current science topic on evolution and adaptation.

By the time we left the polar bears, temperatures had soared to an incredible 32°C! As we continued our journey through the park, we passed the monkeys before spotting a truly magnificent tiger enjoying a peaceful midday nap in the shade. We also marvelled at the towering giraffes before heading to the play area for lunch and a chance to burn off some energy in the playground.

After lunch, we embarked on a trek to the far side of the park, where a playful group of sea lions entertained us with their impressive skills and playful personalities. Throughout the day, we were lucky enough to spot many other incredible animals, including lions, capybaras and giant otters. However, the extreme heat proved just as challenging for the animals as it was for us, with many seeking shelter from the sun.

Regular water breaks and a welcome ice lolly helped keep everyone refreshed, but as the afternoon went on, it became clear that the soaring temperatures had taken their toll. Reluctantly, we made the decision to begin our journey home an hour earlier than planned.

The excitement of the day, combined with the intense heat, was finally too much for many of our Year 6 pupils. The coach journey home was noticeably quieter, with several children (and perhaps a few staff members!) enjoying a well-earned afternoon nap.

The trip was a fantastic opportunity for the children to see animals they had previously only encountered in books, documentaries and on television. More importantly, it gave them another opportunity to spend time together, create lasting memories and celebrate the end of their primary school journey.

As their time at Oxclose Primary Academy draws to a close, this wonderful day out will undoubtedly remain one of the many special memories they take with them. It was a day full of laughter, learning, friendship and adventure—a fitting way to celebrate our remarkable Year 6 pupils and their final days at Oxclose.
